17. Latimer and Crick

The left hand side of this mill was built in the late 19th century by Corn and Fodder merchant T.C Thompson situated on the banks of the River Nene, so that materials could be delivered by barge.

The 1899 Insurance Plan shows the original Thompson Corn and Fodder Mill.

The premises was later taken over and expanded by Latimer and Crick a business that had started out as a boot and shoe company, but diversified into agricultural supplies, The Company supplied Phipps with grain for the brewing process. After the business relocated the building was damaged by fire 2006. Escaping demolition, the building was converted into private apartments. Interestingly, the co-founder of Latimer and Crick, Walter Drawbridge Crick, was the grandfather of Francis Crick, the biologist who helped map the structure of DNA.
